Facebook Dec. 21 released Facebook Memology, the social network’s list of trends from data mapped about top trending words and phrases in U.S. status updates for the year. Lars Blackstrom, a Facebook data scientist, said he and his team looked at how many times each phrase with length from one to four words occurred in U.S. Facebook status updates, then computed the rate at which each phrase occurred in 2009 relative to 2008. Michael Jackson, Farmville, Twitter, New Moon, swine flu, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the New York Yankees all commanded users’ attention.
